Zach Harper, serving us chicken before serving his country.

Memorial Day was a couple of days ago and I'm grateful for a holiday where we can show our respect and appreciation to those who served. Annette's eldest son Zach, in the photo above, is also one of those who is currently proudly serving in the Marines. We are all proud of him and I am personally grateful that he is willing to risk all for love of country.

On that note, Zach wasn't always the sterling example of military might that he is today. As a younger person he got into his share of trouble and even worked at KFC for a while where he learned more about the ins and outs of fast food than he'll ever want to remember. As a teenager, he also ran out of his house late one night after an argument with his folks. Nothing too unusual in that, most people have disagreements and feel the need to get away but in this case Zach forgot a few essentials before taking off out the window. Like a shirt, and shoes, in winter, while it was raining. So about midnight, Trish and I were called to pick him up at a park near his house. Fortunately for us, and Zach, he's grown up a bit since then and only leaves the house half clothed when a superior officer tells him to.
